Thong and Paet took us to visit Paet’s village (she is Black Tai tribe) where they had collected silkworms in their silk cocoons, and were getting the silk off them to use for weaving.
They put the silkworms into a pot of boiling water and as they boil they pull a thread off the cocoon and keep pulling until the silkworm is exposed. By this time the worms are cooked so these are eaten also. It’s amazing how nothing in Laos is ever wasted.
The silk they obtain in the few weeks they do this practice then lasts the whole year for weaving fabrics and wall hangings. To see a couple more photos of the silk weaving, click here.
